Keynote Lecture: Delivering on the Smart City by Dr Ellie Cosgrave

Abstract: In the Liveable Cities research programme we are fuelled by a desire to ‘Transform the Engineering of Cities’ (TEC) for a better, more sustainable and equitable future. Our core belief is that the fundamental assumptions behind engineering practice as it stands are not appropriate or sufficient for tackling 21st century challenges. This talk will explore how ICT and the emergence of the ‘smart city’ is challenging how we conceptualise, design and manage cities and city services. It will focus on urban applications that are transforming cities across the world.

Bio: Dr Ellie Cosgrave is a Research Associate on the EPSRC funded Liveable Cities Programme; a cross disciplinary research programme that aims to develop realistic and radical approaches to engineering that support the development of low carbon, resource secure cities that maximises citizen wellbeing. Her work explores transformative approaches to policy making and governance of cities. Ellie has worked with local governments on their smart city strategies as well as international organisations such as UN Habitat and the C40 Cities to help them understand the impact of smart technology on the lives of citizens;
