IEEE Region 8 Climate Challenges | AI in Enhanced Weather Forecasting Hackathon

We are excited to invite you to participate in the “IEEE R8 Climate Challenges AI in Enhanced Weather Forecasting” international Hackathon! This is a unique opportunity to contribute to climate change resilience by leveraging AI for fusion of various weather data to increase accuracy of short-term weather forecasts. The challenge focuses on three biomes of Europe, Middle East and Africa (IEEE Region 8): Savanna Preservation, Clean Urban Air and Resilient Fields.

The competition is implemented through IEEE DataPort site and envisioned as an ongoing effort to contribute with learnings and datasets in multiple cut-off dates. The first set of cut-off dates is:

  • Hackathon Competition, by 1-Nov-2024: For teams of up to 5 members and use the existing or new datasets to generate 7 days ahead weather forecasts for case studies.
  • Scoring, by 11-Nov-2024: The final evaluation of hackathon submissions will be performed on the real weather forecast, announcing the high-score and competition winners.
  • Live Presentations, 27-30-Nov-2024: Representatives from top 5 teams will be invited and sponsored to attend IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Conference 2024 in Bari, Italy, to present their approaches and form a report in IEEE-style formatted manuscript.

By participating, you’ll have the chance to gain valuable experience and make a tangible step towards impacting our future.

The IEEE Region 8 Climate Challenges is a program of Region-wide competitions aiming at climate change mitigation by technological initiatives. As series of large-scale international competitions from different technical areas, challenges are focused to specific objectives, member focus groups and geographic areas to address the local perspectives. Organised by IEEE Region 8 and sponsored by IEEE Foundation and IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board, the three challenges are established:

  1. AI in Enhanced Weather Forecasting – details here
  2. Disaster-resilient Communication – details here
  3. Technical Innovations – with academic and startup initiatives
