Event Review | IEEE UK and Ireland PES Chapter Distinguished Lecture – Holistic Approach to Modelling and Analysis of Sustainable Integrated Power Networks by Prof Jovica V Milanović, IEEE PES Vice President

On Wednesday, 11th December 2024, the IEEE PES SBC and the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester hosted Professor Jovica Milanović for a distinguished lecture on “Holistic Approach to Modelling and Analysis of Sustainable Integrated Power Networks.” Professor Milanović’s lecture was held at 15:00 in the Nancy Rothwell Building at the University of Manchester and online for attendees around the world.

Professor Milanović is the Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester, a Visiting Professor at the University of Novi Sad and the University of Belgrade in Serbia, and an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland in Australia. He has chaired multiple international conferences, published over 600 research papers and reports, and delivered over 30 keynote speeches at international conferences. Professor Milanović is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of both the IET and the IEEE, and immediate past Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems.

Professor Milanović’s presentation explored the future of net-zero goals and the resulting need for a holistic approach to modelling of integrated power networks. With a clear overview of what technologies for net-zero goals will require, Professor Milanović first outlined some of the key technical characteristics of sustainable power systems. Professor Milanović went on to describe the need for a multi-parameter, multi-criteria, and multi-system approach to address these new challenges. He presented a look at projects in which this holistic approach is utilised in power system modelling and analysis. Professor Milanović concluded with the identification of existing and upcoming challenges in future net-zero sustainable power systems and a call for multidisciplinary research and collaboration.

Professor Milanović’s lecture attracted 77 total attendees over the course of the event with 31 attending in the lecture theatre and 46 tuning in online. Following the lecture, an extensive Q&A session saw Professor Milanović fielding questions from attendees in the room and online, including thought-provoking questions from visiting researchers and local academics.

The University of Manchester IEEE PES and UK & Ireland IEEE PES Chapters are sincerely grateful to Professor Milanović for his engaging lecture that invited ample discussion on holistic modelling and analysis in power systems research.
