Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Chapter
Welcome to the IEEE UK and Ireland Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Chapter.
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is the ability of equipment and systems to coexist with each other, and within their electromagnetic environment, without causing or suffering interference. Typically this involves limiting emissions in order to prevent interference to all types of radio services and conducted communications, and having sufficient immunity to strong signals such as high powered equipment, transmitters such as mobile phones, and environmental effects such as electrostatic discharges and lightning. The EMC Directive in Europe provides requirements for EMC, and each Member State carries out market surveillance and sets penalties for non-compliance.
The Chapter was formed in 1991 and covers all aspects of EMC: technical, regulatory, and management of compliance. Technical meetings in the form of one-day or half-day mini-symposia are held typically four times per year, in different geographical locations. There are usually four or five speakers from a variety of backgrounds at each meeting.
Membership of the EMC Society and the IEEE provides opportunities for networking and discussion, and four copies annually of the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility Magazine, and of the IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility. Membership also offers free access to the IEEE Xplore Digital Library with information on over 12000 conference papers and over 1700 articles from journals and magazines relating to EMC alone, with a total of over 3.8 million papers across the electrical and electronics disciplines. Many papers from the EMC Society are free with membership.
